How viable are elemental and ailment infusions vs. Is it just because the mace is better against heavily armored targets? If I'm fighting something unarmored would the hand axe be better, then? It has higher attack power than the mace, an approximately equal swing speed, a wider swing arc, and a lower stamina cost, so on the surface it appears to be better. How good is the hand axe in Dark Souls 2? It was the bomb during my SL1 run of the first Dark Souls, but I've read multiple sources claiming that it's really bad in Dark Souls 2. So, I have a few questions I was wondering if anyone could answer.

If poison arrows still function properly without meeting the stat requirements, I suppose I could get a long-range bow and abuse those I just need to go to No Man's Wharf so I can move Gavlaan to Doors of Pharros. On the other hand, now that I've actually gotten into this a bit, I don't want to quit, either. My mace is already raw +10, but it still takes three hits to kill an unarmored peasant, so I'm not too confident about my chances in the long run. I was being one-shotted by hollowed soliders in the Forest of Fallen Giants, but I got the invisible Auroros set, and that has largely kept me out of one-shot territory thus far, except for a few bosses. I already know that the mace is the archetypal weapon for these kinds of runs, that the wooden ladle provides ADP if off-handed, and that the light crossbow can inexplicably be two-handed by an SL1 despite requiring 13 strength. But now that I've reached Iron Keep and Brightstone Cove Tseldora, I think I might not be able to resist trying to finish this. I didn't really have any intentions of finishing the run at that point I just kind of figured I would beat a few bosses, start getting one-shotted by everything, and then laugh it off as a bad idea. And then I decided to join the Company of Champions immediately after reaching Majula. I was already well aware of the inherent difficulties that an SL1 run presents in Dark Souls 2 compared to the other Souls games, such as reduced i-frames, and an even more crippled pool of usable gear than usual.
